Critical Thinking
Hear Before Answering
“Answering before listening is foolish and shameful.”

Proverbs 18:13
Most of us can listen just long enough to find a place to speak. We catch a few words, connect them to an old experience, and begin preparing our answer. Proverbs calls that foolish because an answer formed too early responds to our assumption instead of the person in front of us.
Listening is a discipline of humility. It accepts that our first understanding may be incomplete. Tone, history, fear, and unspoken needs can shape what a person is trying to say. Good listening asks for clarity before reaching a conclusion.
This matters in families, workplaces, churches, and every place where people carry different stories into the same room. A quick answer may win the moment and lose the relationship. A careful answer begins with enough curiosity to understand the concern beneath the words.
Hearing fully does not require agreement. It gives us accurate information and honors the dignity of the speaker. Slow down. Ask one more question. Repeat what you believe you heard. Wisdom has a better chance of entering when listening lasts longer than our impulse to defend.

Understanding begins when listening lasts long enough.

A Question to Carry
What do I need to hear fully before I form my answer?

Practice This Week
In one important conversation, wait until the other person finishes. Say, 'What I hear you saying is...' and check your understanding. Ask one sincere question before offering your view.
